Simmers having a new title to play that can offer them many of the same things The Sims 4 does provides a reason for EA to up the QA team numbers to reduce issues and backlash, and a reason to help support a team just trying to make a great game. You live and then you die. It’s more difficult to take that stance when a viable alternative hits the market. Where are fans of this type of game going to go? When the answer is ‘nowhere’, the suits get complacent and that’s bad all around. Online backlash can be shrugged off if there’s no similar title in existence. Often the people in charge of hiring and firing are just looking at the numbers, and any risk to those numbers provides a solid reason to up your game. It doesn’t matter how much the development team loves the game, they aren’t the ones holding the purse strings. The backlash to subpar Sims content matters more when an alternative is on the horizon because competitors can reduce market share and in turn, profit. Paralives’ existence gives EA a reason to invest in the Maxis team. As the game continues to grow, making sure new additions don’t break existing things is harder and harder, and solving these issues isn’t going well. The Sims 4 has been around for eight years and it shows. My Wedding Stories was such an unplayable mess that Deligracy, a well-known Australian YouTuber and Streamer who plays The Sims 4 almost exclusively, uninstalled it without creating any content and she wasn’t alone. Some of these errors have been fixed, but others have not. We’ve had lost saves, also known as Error 0, rapid aging and incest, a wedding pack where you had to really work to get married, and, well, more incest. Fans have been begging for content, but recently the number of issues with The Sims 4 DLC has been growing. Until now The Sims hasn’t really had any, and it’s suffered for it. However, regardless of who copied who, or if they even copied at all, it isn’t always a bad thing. You can also argue that things like colour wheels were originally used in previous Sims games, as were other features you can see in Paralives. There were hints that The Sims 5 was in its concept stages as far back as 2018, and Paralives was mostly screenshots and ideas for a lot of its early stages, so neither will have known a lot about the other. In reality, both games have likely been developed at the same time and have probably taken ideas from each other. Now Project Rene appears to be doing the same and Paralives fans are crying foul. The team has showcased several videos and stills of build mode, which uses colour pickers and pattern selectors to allow huge flexibility. Paralives places an emphasis on flexibility, especially when it comes to building. This is due to the similarities in approaches taken by both games and their respective concept art. While comparisons have been made between the two since Paralives was first announced, they’ve taken a sharp increase since Project Rene’s announcement. It’s said to have taken inspiration from The Sims but focuses on real-life simulation and is ruling out features such as occult characters. Currently, Paralives has ten people working on it and is funded via Patreon, where supporters are helping shape the game. He unveiled the project to the public in June of the same year, and it’s grown substantially since then. Paralives came to paralife back in January 2019, and is the creation of Alex Massé, an indie developer who previously worked on a number of Project Tiny demos, as well as PewDiePie’s Tuber Simulator. No other game has ever put the focus on life simulation so purely. While there are building elements to the game, and the depth of these has grown over time, the focus still remains on ‘playing with life,’ a motto The Sims itself has used in advertising campaigns. There’s no set background for your Sim’s story, and each and every character you create can be whoever you want them to be. They are the focus of the game and the world is built around them, regardless of whether you build it yourself or not. The Sims is unique in that the Sims themselves are completely customisable, not just in looks, but also in personality. Sure, there are games with life simulation elements in them, like Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, or any of the other 597 farming and life simulation titles that exist, but none have focused just on simulating life. For a very long time, the series has faced no competition. Since then we’ve seen three numerical sequels, with the latter two in particular spawning numerous DLC packs of varying sizes. It began with The Sims way back in February 2000, when a chunk of its current player base wasn’t even born. The Sims has been a powerhouse for a long time.

Overall, this lived up to its name as the Tailgator. PROS: large capacity, easy to use, makes amazing margaritas, keeps perfect consistency even in hot ambient temps, fun colorsĬONS: only has one speed, slight drip at times from the spout after pouring The double wall insulation kept the same slushie consistency for almost two hours as we finished the first batch. It created a gallon of slushie goodness that made us the hit of the tennis party. The consistency of these drinks is perfect and so refreshing on a hot day. The spout did have a drip after a pour and that could be from a little piece of ice not quite allowing it to fully close. You need to have the unit running/powered ON when you pour these drinks, so the spout doesn’t freeze up. Grab a cup and put it under the easy pour spout and pull it out to watch the slushie goodness start to flow. This is far quieter than your normal blender and was quieter than we expected. We believe the 10 minutes or even a touch longer is the perfect time to transform the ice into the perfect slushie. Once you hit the power sit back for 8-10 minutes to allow the machine to work it’s magic. You can also use a generator or normal plug at your house. We used a portable power station (Alpha ESS) to power our unit up. This isn’t my favorite way to power it up, as you’ll have to almost be in the car when you’re mixing this up. It comes with a car adaptor, so you can plug it into the cigarette lighter to get the juice. Now on to powering this portable margarita maker. Remember the lid must be securely attached and have the arrows line up or the unit will not start. The mix is good for many hours so just go ahead and get the machine freezing down. All machines are delivered with an industrial quality 12 gauge extension cord. Dynasty Warriors: Gundam Reborn is available for download now on the PlayStation Network for PlayStation 3. This review is based upon a PlayStation 3 review code provided by the publisher. It's decent for anime fans, but you'd think that saving the universe would be a less boring affair. The presentation is loyal, but also recycled (I swear I've seen some of these animations before) the gameplay is effective but hardly revolutionary and the modes have something to offer, although co-op can be a frustrating affair if your buddy isn't right beside you. This is a terrible restraint that should've been done away with altogether.ĭynasty Warriors: Gundam Reborn is sure to be a welcome return for some, but the rust is clearly showing on this series. Worse yet, once an online co-op session is over, either you or your buddy are kicked out, and you need to go back in and reconnect. While split-screen co-op can be a good time, online co-op is held back, due to the fact that you can only join others who have completed the same levels as you. However, the co-op isn't as well implemented as it should be. It's like having access to all of these race cars, and yet you're forced to drive the same granny training course over and over. You can also open up new Gundam suits to try out, although, again, you really won't be doing much with them. The modes are plentiful, with an Ultimate Mode that opens up various corners of the Gundam universe (something fans will enjoy more than general audiences), and plenty of side missions where you can rack up kills by the hundreds. That's how Dynasty Warriors games have worked over the years (and how they will continue to operate), but I couldn't help but think Bandai Namco could've added something more with big robots at play. You head into a stage and bash, bash, bash, check out what post-story comes from it, then head into the next stage and bash, bash, bash. Like the previous Gundam games, it doesn't really evolve in any way. It's like your Gundam suit wasn't built to lose, making you wonder why anyone would go up against it in the first place.Īnd that's Reborn's biggest problem. However, only a particular few offer any sort of genuine challenge. Most of the time, these guys are easy to manage, as you guard against an incoming attack, then unleash your own, with a few well-timed strikes and perhaps even a super-charged technique to score an even bigger combo. Once you clear enough of them, you re-take the area and move on to the next one, eventually cleaning house on enemy occupancy until the "boss" characters show up. Oh well, if at first you don't succeed, right? Fortunately, it's available in traditional Japanese voice acting, so you don't have to listen to the same breed of cornball actors that make the other Dynasty Warriors games so laughable.įrom there, after choosing your Gundam suit (from an array of various series in the brand, a nice touch), you'll head into battle, flying your way through a limited stage and wiping out areas overrun with powerful (yet overall useless) enemy Gundams. The story is pure psychobabble, with heroic soldiers taking on renegade soldiers who continue to use the same sort of tactics to take over areas, despite the fact that they've failed before. It is a very good plane though don't get me wrong, and I certainly wouldn't fault anyone for using it. Series writer Marc Laidlaw initially conceived of Black Mesa, and brainstormed numerous potential names before arriving on the final one, including "Black Butte Missile Base", "Diablo Plains", and "Diablo Mesa". Navigating through a maze of teleporters in a teleportation lab, he is finally allowed by scientists into a giant teleportation chamber that sends him to Xen, ending the Black Mesa portion of the game. In "Lambda Core", Gordon floods the facility's nuclear reactor with coolant, fighting off aliens along the way. In "Forget About Freeman!", Freeman makes his way past a battle between aliens and the military to reach the Lambda Complex. In "Surface Tension", Freeman crosses a hydroelectric dam, evading a Boeing AH-64 Apache. In "Questionable Ethics", Freeman stumbles upon a secret part of Black Mesa that studies aliens. He escapes, and infiltrates a waste processing facility. However, he is caught by soldiers and dumped in a trash compactor. In "Apprehension", Freeman fights through flooded rooms filled with aquatic aliens called Icthyosaurs. He then navigates a series of underground rail tunnels in "On a Rail", culminating in the rocket launch of a satellite that can determine the scope of the disaster. After successfully destroying the tentacle with a rocket engine, in "Power Up", Freeman must kill a Gargantua alien by baiting it into a room with giant Tesla coils. In "Blast Pit", he must destroy an alien tentacle that has appeared from beneath a nuclear silo. Escaping an Osprey helicopter, he goes back underground in a different location. He travels through a series of Cold War-era storage rooms to reach the surface. In "We've Got Hostiles", Freeman encounters soldiers sent to cover up the disaster by killing all of Black Mesa's personnel. He then makes his way through an office complex. In "Unforeseen Consequences", Freeman returns to the Anomalous Materials Lab, fighting his way through the aliens that have started appearing from warps in space. The Resonance Cascade disaster occurs, and Freeman must escape the destroyed chamber. He explores the area, donning his Hazardous Environment Suit, and then enters the test chamber. " TRON was always on that list." It's not hard to understand why: the French electronic duo were a perfect match for the film's dazzling future aesthetics. ZZ Top finally got their low-down, cheerfully sleazy blooze-n-boogie right on this, their third album. It couldn’t have happened to a better record. Tres Hombres is the record that brought ZZ Top their first Top Ten record, making them stars in the process. That’s where the second difference comes in - they have a much better set of songs this time around, highlighted by the swaggering shuffle “Just Got Paid,” the pile-driving boogie “Bar-B-Q,” the slide guitar workout “Apologies to Pearly,” and two Dusty Hill-sung numbers, “Francine” and “Chevrolet.” There are still a couple of tracks that don’t quite gel and their fuzz-blues still can sound a little one-dimensional at times, but Rio Grande Mud is the first flowering of ZZ Top as a great, down-n-dirty blooze rock band.įLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 33:30 minutes | 1,16 GB There are slight production flares that date this as a 1972 record, but for the most part, this is a straight-ahead, dirty blues-rock difference. The first difference is the heavier, more powerful sound, turning the boogie guitars into a locomotive force. With their second album, Rio Grande Mud, ZZ Top uses the sound they sketched out on their debut as a blueprint, yet they tweak it in slight but important ways. Too much of this record glides by on its sound, without offering any true substance, but the tracks that really work - “(Somebody Else Been) Shaking Your Tree,” “Backdoor Love Affair,” “Brown Sugar,” and “Goin’ Down to Mexico,” among them - show that from their very first record on, ZZ Top was that lil’ ol’ blues band from Texas.Ġ1 – (Somebody Else Been) Shaking Your TreeįLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 39:04 minutes | 1,47 GB They have a good, ballsy sound that hits at gut level, and if the record’s not entirely satisfying, it’s because they’re still learning how to craft records - which means that they’re still learning pacing as much as they’re learning how to assemble a set of indelible material. Simply put, it’s a dirty little blues-rock record, filled with fuzzy guitars, barrelhouse rhythms, dirty jokes, and Texan slang. Now sporting long beards, golf hats, and boiler suits, they met the emerging video age head-on, reducing their “message” to simple iconography. By their next album, Eliminator, and its worldwide smash follow-up, Afterburner, they had successfully harnessed the potential of synthesizers to their patented grungy blues groove, giving their material a more contemporary edge while retaining their patented Texas style. Their third album (Tres Hombres) gained them national attention with the hit “La Grange,” a signature riff tune to this day, based on John Lee Hooker’s “Boogie Chillen.” Their success continued unabated throughout the ’70s, culminating with the year-and-a-half-long Worldwide Texas Tour.Įxhausted from the overwhelming workload, they took a three-year break, then switched labels and returned to form with Deguello and El Loco, both harbingers of what was to come.
